Concrete clones

  • I went to the financial district of Paris today. Usually, I like wandering around skyscrapers and buildings that reach for the heavens, but in a city as pretty as Paris, these towers of glass, steel, and concrete just look like they were built from something like an Ikea manual. They just seem to lack imagination and flair when you compare them to the vast majority of buildings in Paris.

I guess any modern-day architect might feel a little intimidated at the prospect of building something grand, something that makes a statement, in a city with some of the most remarkable buildings in the world. Then again, maybe not. Maybe skyscrapers are like Ikea cupboards. They’re relatively cheap, can be built quickly, and are functional in most locations.

Stand here and look up using Google street view.
