This is the second time I’ve featured a photograph of street art on Rue Jeanne d’Arc in Paris. The first was back in May when I photographed Rise Above Rebel by Shepard Fairey.

Rue Jeanne d’Arc, in the 13th arrondissement of Paris, features a surprisingly high number of large scale murals. This is the newest to appear, completed in mid September. It’s the creation of Julien Malland, a Parisian artist otherwise known as Seth Globepainter. Earlier this year I photographed another large scale mural by ‘Seth’, and back in 2013 I posted a picture on Instagram of a mural of his that I came across in Melbourne.

Since 2003, the 44 year old artist has been travelling the world transforming walls and buildings, often with his colorful child characters who peer into rainbows. On his website, ‘Seth’ says the children are “somehow connected to the chaotic environment in which they are revealed. Witnessing the outcome of globalization, its creations are celebrating traditions. Thus they are defining a hybrid culture between modern expression and traditional representation.”

I’m not going to pretend I really understand that, I just like the way this artist really injects color into places that might otherwise be utilitarian or drab. In a video you can see online, Seth says, “The way i see the world going is rather somber. I don’t want to represent that on the wall. I want to put something positive there. I want that when people see my characters it sets something off, just for a few seconds, that it gets them out of their reality. For me it’s a way of struggling against the fatalism of a world that crushes hopes or changes hope into material objects.”
