French archaeologists, Thomas (standing) and Stephane, carefully remove earth as they investigate an ancient sinkhole in medieval church of Saint Pierre in Chartres, France. Elements of the former Abbey date back to as early as the seventh century.

The church has been destroyed and rebuilt at various times throughout history, a fact that has made it particularly interesting to archeologists. Recent discoveries include a complete human skeleton as well as many ancient artifacts.
