  • New Years Eve

Through the blur of a party at a friend’s apartment in Melbourne, 2016 comes to an end as fireworks explode in the sky to herald the arrival of the new year. This then is the 366th picture of the year and the final one on this ‘visual journey through a year in my life.

It was a real challenge to keep up with this project at times, but in the end it’s been a rewarding one, giving me a catalog of pictures that capture the stories, moments, and memories of another year that has taken me from one side of the world to the other and back again. It started in a blur in Singapore, and ended in much the same way back in my beloved Melbourne.

Finding a photograph every single day isn’t as easy as it might sound. I didn’t travel as much in 2016 as I did in 2012, so there were days when I found myself searching the familiar for something new to share, some new story to tell. It was often those days when I found some of my favorite connections, moments, or stories, but not always the best picture. Sometimes I would meet someone or learn something that couldn’t be captured in a single picture. I’d have an experience that my camera couldn’t capture, and my words would fall short of describing. But what a way to go through a year, in search of experiences, connections, knowledge, and stories. As hard as it was at times, it was always a pleasure.

So tomorrow will feel strange when I don’t need to find a picture or make sure my camera is close at hand. I’m looking forward to a rest for sure, to going to bed at a reasonable hour, and getting some sleep at last!

I hope you’ve enjoyed the project, the photographs, and my stories, despite the typos and errant apostrophes. In the coming year I’ll be launching a podcast called 5 minutes of somewhere, about the symphonies of sound that surround us all, and I’d be delighted if you would check that out. The podcast will be about the sound, but the website will feature pictures and backstories, rather like the post I made from Andorra.

So looking back on the year I’d love to know if you have a favorite picture or story. You can tell me in the comments on the site or facebook, or send me an email if you like, I’d love to hear from you.

So that’s it… 366 Pictures is finished. If you’re one of the people who joined me on this visual journey through 2016, then I’d like to thank you for your interest and support.

I hope you have a fantastic year ahead.
