Going rustic

  • Having been land-locked for a while I was ready to see the sea once more. Cambodian islands and beaches might not be as popular as nearby Thailand, but just off its southern coastline the country has some beautiful and quiet islands, perfect for a few days of relaxation.

Accompanied by my friend and travel companion, Jade, I caught a long wooden boat over to the small island of Koh Thonsáy. The beaches there reach into the warm waters of the Gulf of Thailand that I’m told turns to pure gold at sunset.

This is no five-star resort for sure. The walk from the boat to the beach bungalows was along a winding path that made carrying my already heavy luggage that bit more challenging. The bungalows themselves are very much on the rustic side, and power is only available from 6pm until the small bar closes. However, such shortcomings are easy to forgive as soon as your toes touch the golden sand of the unspoiled beach that is nearly deserted at this time of year.
