Novice monks

  • I visited Doi Saket Temple today, about 30 minutes from Chiang Mai. I rode out there by moped, taking the back roads as much as I could. I wasn’t specifically going to the temple, but when I arrived in Doi Saket I saw a steep set of stairs leading to the temple at the top of the hill.

Within the impressive temple grounds there was a giant golden Buddha (Phra Buddha Pathimakorn) sitting with his back to the town below him. That seemed a little odd to me, but I’m sure it was nothing personal.

As I walked, almost completely alone, around the temple grounds I ran into four young boys who, I assume, are novice monks and pupils of the Monastic school there. We did have a brief exchange of words, though they spoke Thai and I spoke English. After a little confusion they smiled and went on their way.
