It’s Labour Day weekend in Australia and the Moomba Festival in Melbourne. These happy-go-lucky gang of Aussie flagged cheerleaders were helping to whip up the crowds on the banks of the Yarra River in the city.
Thousands of people had gathered to sit in the sun and watch the Birdman Rally, an event that consists of people, often in comical flying costumes and contraptions, running off a platform in an attempt to fly over the river. Of course, these attempts always end up with the competitor plunging into the river to the delight of the crowd.
This years winner, Michael Paul, flew 25 meters hanging on to a pair of aluminium wings. He also won the prize for raising the most money for charity. Other prizes that are awarded at the rally include ‘Funniest Moment,’ ‘Best landing,’ and ‘Best hangtime.’
I wish I could tell you something interesting or informative about the cheerleaders, but just as I was about to ask them questions they had to spring back into action and give a few pom pom waving ‘woos’ for something.
