  • New Years Eve
  • Through the blur of a party at a friends apartment in Melbourne, 2016 comes to an end as fireworks explode in the sky to herald the arrival of the new year. This then is the 366th picture of the year, and the final one on this ‘visual journey’ through a year in my life.

It was a real challenge to keep up with this project at times, but in the end it’s been a rewarding one, giving me a catalog of pictures that capture the stories, moments, and memories of another year that has taken me from one side of the world to the other and back again. It started in a blur in Singapore, and ended in much the same way back in my beloved Melbourne.

Finding a photograph every single day isn’t as easy as it might sound. I didn’t travel as much in 2016 as I did in 2012, so there were days when I found myself searching the familiar for something new to share, some new story to tell. It was often those days when I found some of my favorite connections, moments, or stories, but not always the best picture. Sometimes I would meet someone or learn something that couldn’t be captured in a single picture. I’d have an experience that my camera couldn’t capture, and my words would fall short of describing. But what a way to go through a year, in search of experiences, connections, knowledge and stories. As hard as it was at times, it was always a pleasure.

So tomorrow will feel strange when I don’t need to find a picture or make sure my camera is close at hand. I’m looking forward to a rest for sure, to going to bed at a reasonable hour, and getting some sleep at last!

I hope you’ve enjoyed the project, the photographs and my stories, despite the typos and errant apostrophes. In the coming year I’ll be launching a podcast called 5 minutes of somewhere, about the symphonies of sound that surround us all, and I’d be delighted if you would check that out. The podcast will be about the sound, but the website will feature pictures and backstories, rather like the post I made from Andorra.

So looking back on the year I’d love to know if you have a favorite picture or story. You can tell me in the comments on the site or facebook, or send me an email if you like, I’d love to hear from you.

So that’s it… 366 Pictures is finished. If you’re one of the people who joined me on this visual journey through 2016, then I’d like to thank you for your interest and support.

I hope you have a fantastic year ahead.

    1. Hi Simon,

Thank you for 366 Pictures. I have enjoyed following your adventures.
Favourite pictures: The Forgotten Railway (because I have walked there too and find that place fascinating) and Australia Day (because I know how much determination was behind that picture).
      Favourite story: Manic Street Preachers.
I have also very much enjoyed looking back at your pictures from earlier in the year. They are a great souvenir of the fun times we had. Thank you.

Looking forward to “5 Minutes of Somewhere”.

      • Ugh! Maybe. I dunno though. It’s been REALLY exhausting this year. I’ve had other things happening throughout the year and so falling behind was far too easy, then there were prolonged periods in one place, so getting a new and interesting picture each day was sometime bloody hard work!

But you never know. Stay tuned!

    2. I fear 2017 (and my inbox) is going to be a little emptier without your emailed stories of adventures only you could have in a world seen through your eyes.

Thanks again mate, enjoy the break and have a great 2017

    3. Traveling the world vicariously through your pictures and stories has been a lovely pastime this year and I will miss it. I look forward to 5 Minutes of Somewhere and any other postings you have that allows us to journey with you. I hope 2017 brings you contentment and joy – as I’m sure you will bring that to others! Best love, Susan.

      • Thank you so much Susan. I’m sorry I lagged behind so much. I’ll come back and let you and everyone know about the other projects very soon. But for the time being, I’m having a bit of well earned R&R. 🙂

    4. Hi. I have always been checking out on these pictures you have posted but never find time t leave a comment. Sometimes it is quite frustrating to be in a remote place that does not have good access to global scenes and events. So when you you find the time, you just take advantage to read and absorb whatever percentage of new knowledge is retained. Now is a love month…this photo whatever date and year it is… still captures the heart of anyone (man/woman anybody?) looking for love, maybe a one glimpse to remember, maybe a forever, maybe a somebody to go with forever… but whatever it was or it is…IT KEEPS YOU SMILING AND ENJOY and MOVE FORWARD FOR ANOTHER LOVE LIFE ADVENTURE.
