Bill Posters is innocent!

  • Face

On a shop covered in bill posters a face of a man looks out from beneath the tatters. It caught my eye and seemed almost like some kind of modern art rather than just a randomly weathered poster on some vacant shop window.

Seeing it reminded me of a time when I was a kid walking around the town in which I grew up. I would often see notices stuck on the windows of vacant shops that read, in large bold text as if yelling, “BILL POSTERS WILL BE PROSECUTED!”

I saw this sentence over and over again and begun to wonder who on earth Bill Posters was, and what had he done that was so heinous that people felt so strongly they were making their voices heard in this way. I almost felt bad for Mr Posters, because it seemed harsh to just announce that he would be prosecuted, after all, couldn’t there be the possibility that Bill didn’t do it, whatever “it” was?

I felt like creating similar posters proclaiming that read “BILL POSTERS IS INNOCENT!” or perhaps more correctly, innocent until proven guilty by a jury of his peers?

In the end I asked my Mom who Bill Posters was, and what he had done to deserve such a vitriolic campaign against him. She explained, and while I might have felt a little silly, I remember thinking my assumptions were funny given the reality.

So you see, I was reminded of this story again today as I saw a man, maybe Bill himself, looking back at me from behind all those posters.
