People design bridges, they give them grand names and decorate them. Sometimes they become landmarks and destinations in their own right, the subject of photographs and romantic propositions. But I can’t think of a single tunnel that people hold in the same regard. I’ve never been to a tunnel that isn’t entirely utilitarian and forgettable, have you?

I bet if I asked you to name five famous bridges you could do so quite easily. Naming five tunnels might prove a little more difficult.
