  • A Buddhist monk stands almost motionless outside a train station in Tokyo collecting alms from passers-by. To a westerner the monk appears to be begging as he collects money from people, but in Buddhism, alms or almsgiving, is the respect given by a lay Buddhist to a Buddhist monk or nun. For the monk, the act of collecting alms is act is essentially an exercise in humility and devotion. In Japan almost 70% of the population claim to be Buddhist practitioners and/or believers.

    1. This is probably my favorite picture so far. Interested in learning more about Buddhism as well. I think some of the basic (that I am aware of) tenants of the religion are lacking in Western society, which is unfortunate.

      • I don’t know a lot about Buddhism, but at least on the face of it, they seem less uptight than other religions we might mention here. For example, I’ve never seen a crowd of Buddhists marching in protest at gay marriage!

      • Thanks Joelle. After taking the picture and giving him some money I saw he was holding a little sign that read ‘No photo.’ I tend to ignore signs like that if someone is in a public place doing something obviously public though.

    2. well… is he aware that you took his pictures? hmmmm… !!! but this picture and comments made me interested to search about Buddhism!
