Watermelon sunset

Wednesday, August 1st, 2012

  • As the sun goes down on the Gili Islands in the Indian Ocean, Leia sips a watermelon juice and looks out over the beach toward the setting sun. The air is still and the sound of Groove Armada is playing faintly in the background at the small beach bar behind us. It was one of those moments where everything is just as you would choose it to be.

I must have watched hundreds of sunsets, yet somehow they never get old, they never cease to lose their arresting power, or their ability to impress. Why is that I wonder?

As we sat there, dipping in out of a meandering conversation, Leia and I watched the sun dip behind the horizon and beyond the stretch of the Indian Ocean, leaving us to spend the rest of the evening in the company of the stars arriving for yet another night shift.
