Orange sky

  • Bali is a top tourism destination famous for its beaches and tranquility. I’m here crashing the vacation of my friend Leia who has travelled to Indonesia to escape the Australian winter. With that in mind we’ve made our way to the tropical island of Gili Meno for a few days of beach and sun and not a whole lot else.

The island is very small and has no cars, motorbikes or roads. There are just a handful of restaurants and bars for the few tourists who choose this island, the smallest of the three Gili islands which lie just off the shore of Lombok.

I took this photograph as our first day on the island was coming to an end. Clouds were gathering just out over the water as if to discuss where to rain, then just for a few minutes the heavy white clouds glowed a thousand shades of orange, bathing the island in a strange incandescent glow. I almost didn’t take the picture as I sat there transfixed by the immense orange cotton cloud which I’m happy to say, decided to take its rain elsewhere.

      • It was a rather surreal light, and it really did only last a few moments. Like I said, I nearly didn’t take the picture because I just sat there thinking “Wow, look at this!” 🙂

        • I get that. I does look surreal. And the reflexion of the sky on the water is as much beautiful and impressive.

      • The ugly Okkas do what Okkas do, in that they stay by the beach pretty close to the nearest pub from the airport. You need not venture far away from ugly Kutta or over-crowded Ubud to find yourself in beautiful Bali. Top tip, rent a moped and get lost!

Visit the large Gili island and it’s full of party-hard baclpackers, the medium one is for snorkel junkies and Gili Meno is for those who like to lay in the sun (though there are numerous snorkelling trips).
